Geek Archeology from my closet : .. Sorry for the drivel this week folks. It's just that kind of month. .. Transmissions 029 November 22nd 2006 International Detective Dragons From Outer Space The podcast that's collapsing under its own weight. RELIGION Download the .mp3 - FIRST HALF 27.2 meg 1 hour 7 minutes Download the .mp3 - SECOND HALF 18.8 meg 47 minutes A welcome to the Frappr Map goes out to DirtMerchant! Emails from Sarah and Nev and Mick Bradley. Some thoughts on pain tolerance. Important questions and emotionally charged points are made throughout both halves of this episode. Thanks to the Email respondents Camera Guy, DireWolf and Charon there was much to talk about and much to examine carefully. Particularly difficult and intricate problems have arisen behind the misuse and corruption of religion. Defining what religion is and isn't could fuel discussion for six whole episodes and we still wouldn't be finished. My simplistic definition is: a system of personal beliefs and guidelines for moral and ethical behavior, meant to comfort and give a sense of community to its followers. This system is not always, but most often handed to the group by a man who claims it is the will of the creator of the universe. Problem - Sorting through where and how religion melds with politics and economics, and identifying just how quickly and easily people on all sides of a bloody mess can be mislead, used, inflamed, manipulated or . . just plain carrying out evil actions while others react to the results. The fact that groups and individuals ARE carrying out evil actions and intentions is undeniable. The dangers that grow out of the already horrific destruction are in feeding the hate, forgetting who profits by it and settling for simple answers. It isn't a simple problem. It's an ugly problem and it was reached by a complex route. My problem with all of it is, NO answers are acceptable that result in children getting maimed or murdered. And yet we
reached this sad
state of world affairs almost instantly.
In less than a "Cosmic Finger Snap" we've managed a lot of great things and a lot of unbearably stupid things. How
Fast did we do all this?
Here are the pictures for The Second Half of this episode: .. .. .. .. And
after carrying out these little spatial / visual exercises, I go

No major religion is by nature directed against evil intensions, more the contrary.” What he meant to write was “Towards” evil intentions. I understand what he meant now. You all may find this shocking and be thoroughly amazed, but in my haste to post the show, I left out an entire segment! some of it was my own take on religion and spirituality which was not important to include, but I DID want to include a recommendation to listen to this interview with a philosopher named Richard Kearney. Please treat yourself to a wealth of superb insights and refreshing ideas by hearing what he has to say about his “religion of the imagination”. Hauntingly beautiful and unknown in origin. The chain of custody for it goes back to 1987. I was working as an assistant Technical director for a summer event at Liberty State Park where 'Free Theater' was being presented in a restored train terminal. The audio engineer was playing a series of these wonderful, nautical, folk-sounding compositions and I asked him to make a copy for me. A full-out listing of the superior beings on the IDDFOS Frappr Map. Relevant Quotes from Douglas Adams come our way from Sarah, and remind me of a dangerous journey I took when I was 21, Camera Guy comes to the same "life-saving" conclusion that we all have, and offers previous episode feedback. I finally return to Derek's letter and begin considering point three. After giving a synopsis of "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn, I suddenly begin foaming at the mouth and vilifying a fictional gorilla over his teaching methods and opinion about humanity's shared conclusion to all our Myths. What a poor display from anim5. I've based this whole podcast on seeking the answers to most of the questions actually examined in Quinn's book - and when I don't like what I read . . . when the answers seem too close to the truth . . . . . . I stamp my feet and screech like a spoiled brat. A letter from Curt a.k.a. Camera Guy brings us back to a calmer and more mature examination of the topic. Then, a surprise synchronicity is unfolded through a discovery by Mick Bradley of the House of the Harping Monkey. A major aspect of the whole "Humanity as a part of nature" question is tied in to Role Playing Games! Here are the links to the pages examining a fascinating relationship between playing RPG's and tribal culture: http://thefifthworld.anthropik.com/Main_Page http://anthropik.com/2006/05/the-fifth-world-manifesto I've got a lot of reading to do before episode 26. And I think I'm going to start with those two links. The folks over at Anthropik also link to a video, giving a bit of a dire forecast. A confirmation through disturbing facts that "Ishmael" may be right about our high-speed falling machine: You -Tube video that makes you want to learn how to farm. I wrap up with observations that have been clear to many people long before I finally figured it out. "Geeks" have a very clear understanding of the pitfalls in civilization and the danger it poses to a healthy human spirit. I must offer special thanks again to Derek from Texas for bringing "Ishmael" to my attention. Yes, it has evoked a strange reaction and a bizarre personal resentment from me. I hope I can get beyond that and explore the ideas in it further with a clearer view. The Questions to be considered for the next episode: "If we were wrong to invent civilization, what were we supposed to do instead? Where would we be now as a species if we remained leavers? And since we DID invent civilization, and things are about to get extremely ugly, what should we be doing now?" The chain of custody for it goes back to 1987. I was working as an assistant Technical director for a summer event at Liberty State Park where 'Free Theater' was being presented in a restored train terminal. The audio engineer was playing a series of these wonderful, nautical, folk-sounding compositions and I asked him to make a copy for me. He told me they were composed especially for a production he'd just worked on at some University in some state. Am I kicking myself over the fact that I don't remember the show, the school nor the state? Of course I am. Can YOU tell me who composed and performed it? Email response to this episode's question from Digger's Story. Is the child mind particularly vulnerable and universally more prone to nightmares or dreams in general? And why were MY childhood Dreams Soooo bizarre? Were yours? Some pondering of the possibility that dreams are the effect of our brains "tuning in" to our alternate selves in other realities when it isn't tuned into this one. ( see link below to an excellent page about that.) Check out these dream/nightmare images sent in by SmartistOne! : .. The Bulk of the second half is a 32 minute anim5 "mini-drama" depicting a nightmare. It's done in the style of the 1950's radio comedy " The Goon Show". This one was quite a stretch for me, as I'm no good at impersonating ' bluebottle ' or ' Major Bloodknock ', but I had fun with it anyway. 'Hope you do too! An excellent reply from Nev of "Does My Geek Look Big In This" to last week's question: "Are human beings a part of nature? If we evolved here on earth why did we evolve into a species that no longer belongs here on earth? Or have we?" In depth discussion of Nev's response -and of the main mystery of human evolution. Some goofy playacting in the Cave Man tradition. Two are smart and well fed. Two are dumb and dead. A lament that "Ishmael" by Daniel Quin was delivered too late for me to make use of in this episode. But the topic for this show will be explored again soon, partly because it's so vast and partly because of that book. Thank you Derek from Texas for pointing it out to me!
